Marquette Women Set Record
Marquette University Women
Open Challenge:
Once again the excitement and competitive level was acute to say the least! The final 2500-meter
relay raised the roof as each team cheered their mates to shave every second and once again the race
came down to the 'hand-off' that determined the ultimate winners. Now the rivalry turns to the water
as these teams prepare for the Spring Sprint season.
Women's Division: Marquette University (MU)
Going into the Challenge Relay, Marquette University held the lead by 10.3 seconds over the
University of Chicago and 17.4 tenths over Northwestern University. Despite a
'crab' on their final leg, Marquette not only held off a U of C surge, they managed
to set a new Open Challenge record of 16.29.1 beating the previous record of 16:42.0 set by
Northwestern in 2004.

Going into the Challenge Relay, the Lincoln Park Boat Club held a 2.5 second lead over
Northwestern, followed by the University of Chicago and Marquette at
9.6 seconds and 20.4 second respectively. Northwestern, however, was determined to recapture
the title they lost last year to U of C and they did by edging out Lincoln Park
