358 eager competitors, 32 events, 54 flights, 3 Erg Banks and one Jumbo Screen made for another exciting day of focused competition. CIRC continues to grow not only in competitor numbers but in geographical reach as well. We welcomed teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri in addition to most Chicagoland Clubs, Collegiate and Junior teams.
Women's Division: Marquette University (MU)
Going into the Challenge Relay, Marquette University held the lead by 10.3 seconds over the
University of Chicago and 17.4 tenths over Northwestern University. Despite a
'crab' on their final leg, Marquette not only held off a U of C surge, they managed
to set a new Open Challenge record of 16.29.1 beating the previous record of 16:42.0 set by
Northwestern in 2004.
Men's Division: Northwestern University (NW)
Going into the Challenge Relay, the Lincoln Park Boat Club held a 2.5 second lead over
Northwestern, followed by the University of Chicago and Marquette at
9.6 seconds and 20.4 second respectively. Northwestern, however, was determined to recapture
the title they lost last year to U of C and they did by edging out Lincoln Park
by 4.4 seconds with a winning time of 13:42.5. Northwestern also holds the Challenge
record of 13.38 established in 2004.
Women's Division: Detroit Boat Club (DBC)
Going into the Challenge Relay, Detroit had a 6.8 second lead over St. Louis Rowing Club
followed by Ignatius Chicago Crew, New Trier and Chicago Youth Rowing Club at 27
seconds 38.9 seconds and 79.3 seconds respectively. St. Louis put on a spirited
challenge that caught Detroit's boosters anxiously watching the Jumbo Screen. In the end, Detroit
held on to win with a new Women's Youth Challenge record of 16.11.6 beating the previous record
of 16:34.8 set by Ignatius in 2005.
Men's Division: Lincoln Park Juniors (LPJ)
Going into the Challenge Relay, Lincoln Park Juniors had a 1 second lead over Loyola Crew
followed by Detroit and Ignatius Crew at 2.1 seconds and 20.5 seconds respectively. As
we have always said, the Challenge can be won or lost in the hand-off; LPJ's were almost
flawless and in the end resulted in their victory as the Men's Youth Challenge Champs with a winning time of 14:12.4.
CIRC continues to grow as a respected and anticipated annual event. This would not be possible without the enthusiastic support from the individual competitors, coaches and parents. The tone and cooperation of all participants made this truly a pleasurable event to host.
It is simple; without them, CIRC would not be possible. Our heartfelt thanks to: Rob DeCleene, Coach Tim and his better half -Rene, Steve McNulty, Mark Carroll of WinTech, Brian Thompson (Design), Misha Caylor (Webmistress), Montana Butsch, Erin Woods, Dan Byrnes, Antonio Gisbert and Ralph Schatz (photographer). And finally, a warm thanks to all the staff of Creative Access who help to pull this event together in addition to their financial generosity.
