CIRC 2007 Summary

Record Challenge

CIRC Records
This new addition certainly generated interest and influenced competition among those over 24. Most notable was the 19/29 men’s age bracket. With the existing record posted as 06:20.8 by Jamie Schroeder (2001), Mike Wallin broke it by a tenth of a second at 06:20.7 in the Men’s’ Open event. Then came the collegiate event and Tate Williams of Wheaton. He then proceeded to break Mike’s record by 4.9 seconds at 06:15.8. According to CIRC 2007 rules, both these competitors broke a CIRC record. Mike broke Jamie’s and Tate broke Mike’s.

In total, 9 CIRC Records were broken with cash prizes going to the following 6 who are over 24:
Mike Wallin; Brad Zoller; Julie Collens; Andrew Benko; Barton Richards; George Alexander

USA & World Records:
No records were broken in these categories. However, a review of the times posted indicates we have several ‘contenders’ for next year. Our definition of a contender is any competitor within 25 seconds of a USA or World Record. Keep an eye therefore on the following:
Julie Collens; Libby Munson; Brad Zoller; Andrew Benko; George Alexander

Open Master Senior Veterans

We saw a 40% competitor increase in these categories over last year. It is clear that the Record Challenge and the fact that we are now an official Concept 2 C.R.A.S.H –B Satellite has contributed to this growth. The level of competition has certainly stepped up. You are now strongly encouraged to join the new VCIRC; our Virtual Chicago Indoor Rowing Club so we can all strive for personal bests.(link)

Women’s Division: Marquette University (MU)
Going into the Challenge Relay, Marquette University held the lead by a mere 2.0 seconds over the Wheaton College. Marquette’s Relay time of 08:41.2 guaranteed victory for the second year in a row beating their old record by 00:0.08 seconds

Men’s Division: Lincoln Park Boat Club

Going into the Challenge Relay, the Lincoln Park Boat Club held a 6.3 second lead over Northwestern, followed by Wheaton College, Marquette, University of Chicago and first time competitors the University of Iowa. Northwestern was determined to close the gap and although they pulled the best Relay time of 07:09.6, it was not enough to prevent a LPBC victory with a composite score of 13:38.9.
Northwestern still holds the CIRC Open Challenge Record time at 13:38.0

Women’s Division: Lincoln Park Jrs.

Men’s Division: Lincoln Park Juniors (LPJ)
Since the LPJrs were unchallenged, their coaches stepped up to the plate to offer resistance. Although the coaches won and the team members posted a respectable 14:18.3 composite score, it wasn’t enough to unseat the record of 14:10.3 currently held by Detroit Boat Club.
